THE MAN WHO halts us in our way is tall like Theo, but there’s something to his face that makes my stomach bottom out. An ominous tone to his voice. A strange sensation when he side-glances at me.

Just because I was turning putty since Theo took my hand.

I grip Theo’s fingers, looking between the two. They look like they know each other. And from Theo’s frown, I won’t like what’s coming next.

“Sure, go on,” my mate says.

I blink and blink again. This is the first time I refer to him like that. Like my mate. The other man opens his mouth before I have any time to think this over.

“We had outsiders come in two days ago. A pack of wolves.” He slides a glance my way. “They were looking for a missing omega.”

Air leaves my lungs not to come back. I can’t keep a gasp between my teeth. My heart races, and I glance around us uselessly, as if Adrian would be waiting behind a bush. When I pull air in again, I smell the man standing before us. He’s a wolf too, but he smells like sigma. Weird. Don’t they have a wolf pack in here? How can a sigma be by himself? Lone wolves usually live far from society.

But there’s something worse about the whole thing. If I can recognize his status, he can recognize mine too. He knows I’m the missing omega. Fear rushes through my veins, and I grip Theo’s fingers even tighter. He squeezes my hand back, grounding me.

“So?” Theo asks in a voice I could say is flat, but the days we’ve lived together taught me his flat voice is quite different. This one has a veil of threat. I watch his shoulders squaring as if he’s preparing to fight. He’s ready to defend me. Goosebumps pop on my skin and I have to look away when my eyes sting. No one ever treated me like this. Like I’m important for who I am.

The man across from us raises his hands in a pacifying gesture. He might have recognized Theo’s threat. “Is this the omega?”

“She’s my mate,” Theo hisses and this time the threat isn’t veiled. It’s clear, out in the open. He puts himself before me, shielding me from the other man.

“I won’t hurt her,” the man says. Since he’s making this clear, I move to watch him too. He’s in dark jeans and a beige button-down. Very official looking. “But they said she might have been with you. Never mentioned she was your mate, though.”

“They didn’t know,” I say, willing to defend Theo. He wouldn’t have kidnapped me if it wasn’t his bear. Our animals have more control over ourselves than I was aware of.

The man shrugs. “This would have nothing to do with me, usually. But once I told them I heard you had traveled, they went to Ezra. Pretty sure they might go after you guys too. I let Ezra, Julian, and Wyatt know about it. And I smelled trouble, Theo.
